2205 is a nitrogen-enhanced duplex stainless steel alloy. The nitrogen serves to significantly improve the corrosion resistance of the alloy, especially the welded condition. When properly heat treated, the composition of 2205 produces a micro-structure that consists of a nearly equal mixture of austenite and ferrite phases. The micro-structure and composition of 2205 provides corrosion resistance to many environments that is superior to 316 or 317 alloys and a minimum yield strength that is more than double that of conventional austenitic stainless steel.
2205 is the most widely used duplex stainless steel alloy and is often used in welded tubing.
